Why arent British fighters classed as British?
Or United Kingdom for that matter?
Rolling through american boxing magazines, and various world bodies ratings i have noticed that fighters are labelled England, Wales, Scotland or Ireland, NOT british, seems bixarre to me!
After all, you dont get Spanish fighters listed as Catalan or Castillian for example, or Italians Tuscan or Sicillian!
Also, ive noticed in an old Ring book, Maurice Hope and Dennis Andries listed as Antiguan and Guyana respectively.
But these guys had fought for the British title, had British passports, as you must do to fight for the british title.
Fighters from Northern Ireland are also british passport holders!
The last time i looked English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish people were ALL from The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Any ideas as to why the americans do this?
Errm John 5386 is Wrong!
British bocing is governed by the British Boxing Board of Control!
It is the BBBC that issue and revoke licences to fight, discipline fighters and sanction fights.
And you are right, United Kingdom should be after all british listed fighters.
I think it is an attempt by the Americans to lessen the number of British champions and contenders, theyve been doing it for years.
