Looking for MACRO canon lens, comparable to Canon Macro Photo MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Manual Focus Lens for EOS?

I really like this lens, but it is way out of my price rang. The most I would like to spend is $500. I use a canon rebel xti, can anyone help?
The lens doesn't have to be canon (just fit on the canon rebel).

An alternative might be the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM macro lens ($490.00 at B&H) and the Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II ($139.95 at B&H). This will not, however, get you anywhere close to what the MP-E does. Used with the 100mm your magnification would be 1:1.25 as compared to the 1:1 of the 100mm macro by itself. Use two and the ration becomes 1:1.5.

You might also consider using a reversing ring - mounting the lens backwards can give you extreme close-ups. The reversing ring threads on the front of your lens like a filter and has the Canon EF mount to attach to your camera. About $20.00 on eBay.

Yet another alternative would be the Novoflex Reversing Lens Adapter w/58mm Reversing Ring, $538.95 at B&H. This is a complete set-up and with a 28-105mm lens in the reversed position you can achieve 1:7 at the 105mm end and 2.8:1 at the 28mm end. You could use the 18-55mm lens you have if it accepts a 58mm diameter filter but your magnification will be less at 55mm. This set-up would likely require using the Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX, $420.00 at B&H. (Actually, having the MR-14EX in your kit would be a good idea with whatever macro set-up you decide on. I seldom leave home without my macro Ring Light since it seems I always find the prettiest wildflowers in the poorest light).

Since the 100mm macro and the EF 25 II are only $230.00 cheaper than the MP-E you really want - and won't come close to doing what the MP-E does - I suggest saving for the MP-E.
