What's a traditional US American wedding like?
Assume I don't know anything about the way an American wedding day schedule runs. What happens the day of the wedding? Who/how many make up the wedding party? What happens during the ceremony and reception? What are the traditions? Cake-cutting, wedding gown, bridesmaids, ring-bearer, invitations, after the wedding, anything and everything? What can you tell me?
I know I'm asking a lot here, so if there is a website that'll give me all of this information, feel free to provide it. Thank you!
Everything varies. There are 2 trains of thought. One is to be very traditional and the other is to make every detail your own. Also the size of the wedding depends on the budget and the couple.
The two extremes in my family were my own and my husband's niece's weddings.
Mine was a very small at-home affair. Because we wanted the weekend alone, we had our wedding on a Friday evening. It was at my aunt's home during Christmas holidays. We both worked and got off at 4:00 and the wedding was at 6:00 pm. The house was already decorated for the holidays so there was very little extra that needed to be done. We went to my aunt's and got ready. I had chosen a white pants suit and he already had a suit. A few family members arrived and my brother-in-law performed the ceremony. We cut the cake and everyone ate the sandwiches, cheeseball and other things we had prepared the day before. My brother took pictures (I had been a professional photographer and had taught him). My cousin was my maid of honor and my stepson was the best man. That was it.
The niece's wedding was the more up-scale style. The wedding was in a church and she had about 5 bride's maids and he had the same in groomsmen. There was a harp and a string quartet. They played while waiting for the ceremony to begin and at the end of the ceremony. There were maybe 300 guests. Then everyone had to travel to a antebellum home about 10 miles away for the reception. There was a large tent set up outside with a band, dance floor and a beer station. Inside the house, there were 6 food stations and 2 drink stations. Everyone wondered around from station to station eating as they stood in line for the next station. After about an hour, they cut the cake and then everyone went to the tent and danced or sat at a table to watch.
The wedding started about 7:00 pm and we left at midnight.
